Ground Beef Recall Could Affect Thousands
According to an article by cnn.com, Cargill Meat Solutions has released a recall on 8,500 pounds of ground beef that has been contaminated with E. coli as announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The action was taken after three people, two in Maine and one in New York, were identified as becoming ill from a strain of E. coli.
Luckily, the three people infected were not hospitalized. The USDA has stated that BJ’s Wholesale Club stores in New York, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts and Virginia were the ones who received the products. The recalled ground beef was repackaged into other consumer brand names, although the names of the retail brands were not released. The infected beef was shipped on June 11th. The recalled beef bears the USDA establishment number "EST. 9400," a product code of "W69032" and a "use/freeze by" date of July 1. The government has listed the recall as a Class 1, meaning that there is a possibility that the infected meat can cause serious illness or even death. Individuals with questions about the recall should call the Cargill consumer hotline at (877) 788-4953.
