Hair Products Containing Formaldehyde: Congress Asks for Recall

Ten Congresspersons formally requested the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to recall several hair straighteners such as Brazilian Blowout Solution and Acai Professional Smoothing Solution, due to their containing formaldehyde. Congressman Earl Blumenauer had previously expressed concerns to the FDA regarding these products last year due to salon reports of nosebleeds and chest pains after use of certain hair straighteners.

The Oregon Occupational Safety & Health Division and The Oregon Heath & Science University  discovered certain hair straighteners contain between 6-12 percent formaldehyde despite no mention of its inclusion on product labels. Formaldehyde is a potential carcinogen and exposure to this chemical has been linked to throat and nose cancer. Congress requests the FDA to issue a recall of hair products containing hazardous chemicals, requests further product testing and asks for warning labels on any product containing formaldehyde.

Customers who have been injured or suffered illness due to defective product or an exposure to hazardous chemicals hidden in a product may be entitled to monetary compensation. U.S. product liability laws allow consumers of defective products to sue for financial recovery for injuries they suffer because of an unsafe product.
