Pit Bull Blamed For Serious Attack May Be Innocent

Animal control authorities are currently investigating conflicting reports about a pit bull blamed for attacking and biting a Fort Collins woman. The attack caused the woman to suffer a broken hand as a result of the bite. The 24-year-old woman told animal control that she was sitting on her patio in the backyard of her townhome when she was attacked by a dog living in her neighbor’s yard.

The neighbor in question owned two dogs including the dog that the woman identified in the attack. However, the owner stated it was the second dog that attacked the woman and it was not the dog she identified to animal control. As a result, both pit bulls are under quarantine in the animal control center’s custody until they can investigate further and determine what exactly happened.

In some cases when a person owns multiple dogs and one of them attacks, it is entirely possible for the victim to not realize which dog was the attacker. In this instance, both dogs looked very similar to each other including breed and coloring. In order for animal control to determine what happened to the 24-year-old woman, they must be absolutely sure which dog was to blame for the attack. Another neighbor that witnessed the incident stated that the dog that actually attacked the woman was aggressive by nature and was simply trying to protect its owner’s home.

This is often the case with many dog bite incidents that occur in residential areas. A dog may often sense a threat, especially if the victim is approaching the dog in an aggressive or overly excited manner. This is often why children are attacked and bitten as well. When approaching an unfamiliar dog, it is important to be very careful and approach very slowly so as not to startle the dog and cause it to attack. The neighbor who witnessed the incident said she saw the woman run up to the dog to pet it. This action could have been mistaken when the dog saw her and it immediately sensed a threat even if the woman did not mean any harm. This incident demonstrates how careful a person must be when approaching a dog they are unfamiliar with and when they are passing by a yard with a dangerous or aggressive dog.
