Pedestrian Dragged 25 Yards Following Accident

In Indianapolis, Indiana, an 18-year-old girl was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury after she reportedly struck a 20-year-old man and dragged him 25 yards. The accident occurred after the 18-year-old was leaving a party when the 20-year-old jumped in front of her car in an attempt to stop her. The girl struck the man and dragged him for 25 yards before coming to a halt. The victim suffered broken bones, a head injury and road rash but was said to be in stable condition in the hospital.

When police interviewed the victim he told them he attempted to stop the vehicle because he didn’t want people driving from the party after drinking. The charge against the driver is listed as a Class D felony and she is being held on $2,500 bond.

It’s commendable that the 20-year-old man tried to prevent others from leaving the party drunk. Fortunately, the injuries he sustained in the accident were not as serious as they could have been. When a person is dragged for several yards, or even several feet, the injuries they sustain could potentially be life-threatening. Those types of injuries could also be a result of the initial impact in a car-pedestrian accident. Some injuries related to the initial impact in in car-pedestrian accidents can range anywhere from broken bones to more severe injuries such as traumatic head or brain injuries.

When a person is dragged down the road after the impact, injuries can become much worse and even cause a fatality. Although the 20-year-old man’s actions are commendable and he was acting in good faith to prevent people from being in an automobile accident, he is extremely lucky that he did not lose his life as a result of this accident. Unfortunately, many people are not so lucky and they end up with severe injuries or death as a result. In those instances, the driver should be held accountable for their actions because they chose to operate a vehicle after drinking. Nobody should face serious injury or possibly a fatality because of another person’s decision to drive drunk. Victims of drunk driving accidents or car-pedestrian accidents should get compensation for their injuries.
