Teen Arrested in Connection with Auto Wreck Death
An automobile accident in Virginia Beach claimed the life of a 19-year-old man earlier this week. The accident occurred when the Nissan Xterra in which the man was a passenger ran off the road and into some trees before coming to a stop in a ditch. The driver of the vehicle, also 19-years-old suffered minor injuries in the wreck. A 21-year-old passenger in the vehicle suffered more serious injuries.
The driver was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, voluntary manslaughter, illegal possession of alcohol and possession of an identification belonging to another person. Authorities did not release the identities of the 19-year-old victim that died in the accident pending notification of his family.
In the state of Virginia, a DUI charge is a Class 1 misdemeanor and could carry a penalty of up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine. Taking this penalty into account along with the other charges that the 19-year-old driver was charged with, he could face significant jail time and equally significant fines as a result of this accident. There are many cases when a teenager may feel as though they are invincible and that nothing bad could happen to them but this incident demonstrates the harsh reality of the situation.
A large majority of the automobile accidents that occur throughout the United States involve drivers less than 21 years of age. There is almost never a way to predict whether a person will be involved in an automobile accident or not but there are ways to prevent them. Choosing to take a cab rather than get behind the wheel of a car when you are intoxicated is the safest way to avoid a serious accident. Now the 19-year-old driver could face serious penalties for his actions and one of the people he was riding in the vehicle with at the time of the accident lost his life at a very early age. It is very tragic when a potentially avoidable accident results in the death of a young person who was caught unexpectedly in a dangerous situation. Although the driver is very fortunate to be walking away from the accident with minor injuries, he now has to face the reality of the punishments for his actions that resulted in this accident.
