Over 200,000 SUVs Recalled Due to Fire Hazard

Ford Motor Company has issued a recall of over 200,000 Ford Escape SUVs because of a potential defect that could result in a fire hazard. The recall is in effect because of a potential leak of brake fluid that could drip onto the anti-lock brake system and corrode the wires. In some cases the wires could melt and in others it could cause a fire in the vehicle. The recall affects 2001 and 2002 models of the vehicle manufactured between October 1999 and July 2002. Owners of these vehicles can expect notification of the recall in late January and the repairs to the vehicles could be done shortly thereafter.

Woman Arrested after Daughter's Death in Auto Wreck

The mother of a 17-year-old girl that was killed in a drunken driving accident was arrested and accused of helping her daughter acquire alcohol before going to a party. Authorities said the woman took her 17-year-old daughter to a convenience store in San Francisco and allowed her to purchase beer and wine coolers. The next morning the 17-year-old was killed in an automobile accident in which the driver did not notice the traffic in front had stopped, leading to a front-rear collision.

Sheriff's Deputy Strikes and Kills 2 People Responding to Call

Two people were struck and killed by a Sheriff’s vehicle in California when the sheriff was responding to a call. Surveillance footage retrieved from a gas station where the sheriff passed by shows the vehicle speeding through the roadway without its emergency lights on. As the video continues, other emergency vehicles pass much slower with their emergency lights on. The attorney who has released the security footage said he is filing a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of the family of the two victims that were struck by the sheriff’s vehicle.

Arizona Citizen Suing Police for Hit-and-Run Incident

A 23-year-old man who was struck by a Prescott, AZ police vehicle is seeking $100,000 in damages including $4,800 in medical bills, $2,800 in lost wages and $92,000 in pain and suffering costs. The victim suffered damage to his left knee and lower leg following the incident. The lawsuit claims the victim was forced to undergo extensive treatment for his injuries including 12 weeks of recuperation time. A police report stated the victim refused medical attention at the time of the collision. The report states the accident occurred as the officer was attempting to make a left turn at an intersection and was momentarily blinded by the glare of the sun.

52-Year-Old Man Charged Following Dog Attack

A 52-year-old man has been charged with two misdemeanor counts of having a stray dog after the two bulldogs he owns attacked and injured his 45-year-old neighbor. The attack originally occurred as the woman was walking through her driveway and passed the fence where the two dogs were kept. The dogs managed to get through the fence and immediately jumped on the woman and attacked her and her pets. The woman suffered a broken ankle and several lacerations on her hands and face that required stitches.

Car Goes Airborne Killing Two 17-Year-Old Riders

In Lynchburg, VA, two 17-year-old high-school girls were killed when the Honda Civic they were driving went off the side of the road and collided with a concrete pole. The car then went into the air and struck a tree before falling in front of a building. The two had been leaving a movie theater where they met other friends the night the crash occurred. The passenger in the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident and the driver died later. Authorities said high speed was a factor that contributed to the accident and both girls were wearing seatbelts at the time. The school the girls attended created a grief center for grieving students.

Dog Owner Ticketed After Dog Bites Police Dog

A police canine suffered injuries to its nose and right thigh in an attack by two pit bull dogs. The attack happened as the police dog’s owner had taken it out for exercise late in the afternoon when two unleashed pit bulls ran toward the police dog and began biting her. The police officer removed the pit bulls and rushed his dog to the emergency room as she had been losing a large amount of blood. The officer later issued the dog owner two citations, one for failure to restrain an animal and one for failure to exercise her responsibilities as an animal owner.

Single-Vehicle Accident Seriously Injures 4 People in MO

Four people ages 19 and 20 were all seriously injured in an automobile accident in St. Claire, MO when the vehicle they were in went off the road and slammed into a tree after being airborne for a short time. The 19-year-old driver was given a citation for driving while intoxicated and authorities were conducting an investigation to determine if the accident was caused because of a driving stunt they were trying to pull off. The accident occurred when the 19-year-old driver lost control of the Volkswagen causing it to flip multiple times before landing on its roof.

New Jersey Woman Charged with DUI Following Car Wreck

A 25-year-old New Jersey woman involved in a three-car accident was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. Police said the accident involved a Parking Authority official and the accident resulted in the street being shut down to clear the debris. The accident occurred as the Parking Authority vehicle was attempting to make a left turn from a southbound lane when the woman driving the other vehicle struck the official’s vehicle. Her vehicle continued to veer onto the sidewalk following the accident before coming to a stop.

Laws Could Change in Georgia Following Dog Attack on 10-Year-Old

Georgia state laws on dogs could be on the verge of change following a press conference with lawmakers and a 10-year-old girl that was attacked and bitten by two pit bull dogs. The victim suffered injuries to her arms that caused her to lose full function of her right arm and she lost part of her left arm. The attack happened when the girl, then 8 years old, was walking through her neighborhood and was attacked by the two dogs. The victim spoke at the press conference and stated she believes dog owners should be sentenced to serve jail time if they own a vicious dog that attacks another person.
