Sheriff's Deputy Strikes and Kills 2 People Responding to Call
Two people were struck and killed by a Sheriff’s vehicle in California when the sheriff was responding to a call. Surveillance footage retrieved from a gas station where the sheriff passed by shows the vehicle speeding through the roadway without its emergency lights on. As the video continues, other emergency vehicles pass much slower with their emergency lights on. The attorney who has released the security footage said he is filing a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of the family of the two victims that were struck by the sheriff’s vehicle.
Authorities are awaiting an investigation to determine what exactly happened before responding to the suit. The attorney said the officer should not have been driving at a high rate of speed without his emergency lights on.
The video may not prove to be sufficient evidence to prove that the sheriff had any wrongdoing in his actions. However, if he was responding to a call he should have had his emergency lights on in order for citizens in the area to clear the way and allow him to pass through the streets. Without having his emergency lights on, there would be no way for others to know he is responding to an emergency. The sheriff should have had his emergency lights on as an indicator that he was answering an emergency call. Other vehicles clearly had their emergency lights on and were not driving at such a high rate of speed, which could prove that the sheriff’s actions were negligent.
A hit-and-run can involve anybody regardless of their employment. If an investigation proves that the sheriff’s actions were negligent, the wrongful death lawsuit that the attorney filed on behalf of the victims’ families could be successful. However, there should be more evidence to demonstrate that the sheriff in fact acted negligently in his actions that resulted in the death of the two victims. Anybody who has lost a loved one as a result of a hit-and-run similar to this situation should contact an attorney who can help them determine the right course of legal action to take against the perpetrator. If they are successful, they could get compensation for their loss.
