Dog Owner Ticketed After Dog Bites Police Dog
A police canine suffered injuries to its nose and right thigh in an attack by two pit bull dogs. The attack happened as the police dog’s owner had taken it out for exercise late in the afternoon when two unleashed pit bulls ran toward the police dog and began biting her. The police officer removed the pit bulls and rushed his dog to the emergency room as she had been losing a large amount of blood. The officer later issued the dog owner two citations, one for failure to restrain an animal and one for failure to exercise her responsibilities as an animal owner.
This incident demonstrates that not even animals are safe from potential dog attacks. People are well aware that dogs are dangerous to other people but do not realize the dangers that other animals face against potentially vicious dogs. Even large dogs compared to those that initiate the attack could become victims of severe attacks and suffer equally severe injuries as a result. Fortunately, the dog in this incident could possibly make a recover from the injuries she suffered.
According to Illinois animal laws, dog owners who own dogs that are six months old or older are required to have a license to own the dog and the dogs must wear tags associated with that license. All licenses expire in April of every year and it is the dog owner’s responsibility to renew that license. In addition, it is the dog owner’s responsibility to keep their pet under restraint either by a leash, inside a crate or a cage, or in the owner’s property. The owner of a dog may not be held liable for an attack if the victim is either trespassing, committing a felony, if the victim provoked the dog, or if the dog was a police dog assisting in the line of duty at the time of the attack. As a result, the dog owner in this case was held responsible and given multiple citations for the attack.
Anybody who is the victim of an attack like this one and if the attack does not fall under the aforementioned circumstances, the victim should contact an attorney who can help them get compensation for their injuries and ensure that the dog owner is held fully responsible for their dog’s actions.
