College Hockey Players Accused of Wrongful Death Following Bar Altercation

The Dunn County News website reports that two former students in Wisconsin are named in a wrongful death lawsuit along with the Log Jam tavern and Society Insurance Company, the tavern’s insurance carrier. The lawsuit is being filed by the parents of a 22-year-old man that died after he was allegedly assaulted by the 2 students and several other members of the University of Wisconsin -Stout hockey team.

23-year-old Jedidiah R. McGlasson and 21-year-old Jared C. Britton were charged with felony battery and murder charges to which they both pleaded not guilty. According to the report, Britton and Simon got into an argument and were subsequently escorted out of the bar. Later, McGlasson and Britton found Simon riding his bike and ran toward him. The two knocked him off his bike head first into a concrete wall. 5 days later, Simon died as a result of the injuries he received in the incident. The lawsuit states McGlasson and Britton acted maliciously toward Simon and disregarded his personal safety in the attack. The two were expelled from UW-Stout and now face criminal cases filed against each of them as a result of this incident.

The report states this incident initially started out as an argument between Simon and Britton over a sweater and it later escalated into violence. This incident demonstrates how easily a simple argument or altercation can turn into something much more serious, especially when alcohol is added to the mix. Alcohol drastically reduces a person’s awareness and judgment, which could then lead to an argument erupting further. The two men in this incident sought to injure Simon intentionally and therefore they should be held accountable for this incident.
