World Rabies Day Raises Awareness of Owner Responsibility

This past September was World Rabies Day, an event utilized to raise awareness of the disease caused by rabid animals. A Georgia attorney states that although the disease is somewhat rare, it is still important to raise awareness of what the disease can cause and it is important to be on guard whenever possible. He says dog owners can help raise awareness and also to prevent the disease by ensuring that their dogs’ vaccinations are up to date.

The World Rabies Day event is organized by the United States CDC and the UK-based charity called the Alliance for Rabies Control. The state of Georgia requires owners of all dogs, cats, and ferrets to have a license for their animal and they also require owners to vaccinate their pets regularly.

In many cases, dogs, cats, and other pets are often infected with rabies after coming in contact with a wild animal infected with it. When a dog is infected, they can easily pass the disease on to humans if they bite them or come into contact with them some other way. Rabies infections in humans are extremely dangerous and can quickly lead to a fatality if it is not taken care of right away. The tips provided in this report are important to preventing the disease from spreading further. They can not only save your pets but prevent you from running into legal trouble should your pet attack or injure another person.

Owner responsibility is one of the biggest ways to prevent rabies infections against other animals and against humans. This not only means keeping your dog leashed away from pedestrians or other domestic animals, but ensuring they do not escape to a location where they can come in contact with wild animals. Animals such as coyotes, skunks, raccoons and other wild animals could potentially be infected. This is why you should always make sure your dog is safe inside the backyard or inside your home and cannot come in contact with animals infected with rabies. Ensuring that this cannot happen will prevent your pets from becoming fatally ill and it will prevent your dog from attacking or otherwise coming in contact with someone to whom they

6-Year-Old Boy Injured, Bitten by Dog in Pennsylvania

In Pittsburgh, PA, a 6-year-old boy was bitten by a large Akita mix as he was walking home from school. The first-grade student was walking past a fenced-in area when the 1½-year-old Akita mix went underneath the fence and attacked the boy. The boy’s wounds required 10 stitches to repair but doctors expect the boy to recover completely from the attack.

The dog’s owner said the dog was on a chain leash at the time of the attack. The dog was handed over to Pittsburgh’s Bureau of Animal Care and Control and was euthanized following the incident. There are no charges expected to be filed in connection with this incident against the dog’s owner.

When a child is walking home by themselves or is playing outside on their own, they are easily susceptible to dog attacks. If an aggressive dog is nearby, the chances that the child could be attacked increase. This incident demonstrates that even if a dog is leashed and behind a fence, it may not always protect pedestrians walking down the sidewalks because the dog could still escape. Although it is rare for this to occur, a dog could potentially dig underneath the fence and get out or, if the dog is big enough, they could jump over the fence and attack an unsuspecting person.

The victim’s father argued that the dog’s leash was too long to prevent the dog from escaping from the yard. The location where the dog is leashed and the length of the dog’s leash are all factors that could contribute to a dog attack. If a dog’s leash is very long, it could allow them enough slack in the leash to attack a pedestrian walking down the sidewalk near their yard. Leashing dogs in the backyard of a home could add a barrier to prevent such attacks but it is not a guarantee that an attack will not occur. Even with non-aggressive dogs, it is still possible for them to get riled up for some reason and attack an unsuspecting person walking through the streets or on the sidewalk. Unfortunately, many victims of dog attacks are children younger than 10 years old who suffer serious bite wounds as a result of the attack.

Pit Bull Blamed For Serious Attack May Be Innocent

Animal control authorities are currently investigating conflicting reports about a pit bull blamed for attacking and biting a Fort Collins woman. The attack caused the woman to suffer a broken hand as a result of the bite. The 24-year-old woman told animal control that she was sitting on her patio in the backyard of her townhome when she was attacked by a dog living in her neighbor’s yard.

The neighbor in question owned two dogs including the dog that the woman identified in the attack. However, the owner stated it was the second dog that attacked the woman and it was not the dog she identified to animal control. As a result, both pit bulls are under quarantine in the animal control center’s custody until they can investigate further and determine what exactly happened.

In some cases when a person owns multiple dogs and one of them attacks, it is entirely possible for the victim to not realize which dog was the attacker. In this instance, both dogs looked very similar to each other including breed and coloring. In order for animal control to determine what happened to the 24-year-old woman, they must be absolutely sure which dog was to blame for the attack. Another neighbor that witnessed the incident stated that the dog that actually attacked the woman was aggressive by nature and was simply trying to protect its owner’s home.

This is often the case with many dog bite incidents that occur in residential areas. A dog may often sense a threat, especially if the victim is approaching the dog in an aggressive or overly excited manner. This is often why children are attacked and bitten as well. When approaching an unfamiliar dog, it is important to be very careful and approach very slowly so as not to startle the dog and cause it to attack. The neighbor who witnessed the incident said she saw the woman run up to the dog to pet it. This action could have been mistaken when the dog saw her and it immediately sensed a threat even if the woman did not mean any harm. This incident demonstrates how careful a person must be when approaching a dog they are unfamiliar with and when they are passing by a yard with a dangerous or aggressive dog.

Police Officer Suffers Bite Wound to Elbow from Police Dog

A police officer suffered minor bite injuries after he was bitten by a police dog. The incident occurred just after a high speed chase involving three armed robbery suspects. Police officers used barriers on the road to stop the suspects from fleeing. After the chase was over the police officer was conducting a search inside the suspect’s SUV and the dog reportedly mistook the officer for a robber and attacked him.

The dog then pursued the actual suspects into the woods but lost their scent. Police said they are working with the dog in on a training plan to ensure these types of mistakes do not happen again. Authorities did not have a detailed description of the suspects and are asking anybody that has information to step forward.

This incident demonstrates that even a dog’s owner or trainer can be attacked by the dog. Under the right circumstances, the dog can easily make a mistake whether a person is trying to harm them or not. Unlike humans, dogs act on instinct and they will quickly attack if they sense somebody is a threat to them. Given the training that police dogs receive, it is possible that since the officer was in the suspect vehicle, the dog followed his training and attacked the officer after being given the command to go to suspect vehicle. The dog may have been trained to attack on sight, therefore he quickly attacked the officer because he was in the vehicle.

Regardless of how much training a dog may get, an unforeseen accident is always possible. As dog owners people should never fall into the assumption that their dog will not attack them just because they are familiar with them. This incident shows that even highly trained dogs tend to make mistakes at some point and dog owners should always be aware and prepared for an accidental bite or attack given the right circumstances. In this incident, if the person that was attacked had been an innocent bystander, the police officer’s could potentially be held accountable for any injuries that may have occurred. The attack on the officer could also have been much worse. Fortunately, the officer only suffered minor injuries in the attack.

Dog Involved in Second Dog Attack in 2 Years

A Rhodesian Ridgeback dog was involved in the second dog attack since 2009 when the dog allegedly bit off a 3-year-old girl’s ear. The victim in the second attack that occurred in April also involved a little girl. The girl was bitten in the shoulder and suffered puncture wounds as a result of the bite. An investigation into the incident was launched but there is no word on the findings uncovered in the investigation as of yet. The dog’s owner also has other Ridgeback dogs that have been involved in similar incidents.

At least three children have been bitten or scratched and one other person had their arm severely injured in an attack in 2004. The dog involved in that attack and the second dog involved in the attack several weeks ago have both been labeled as “potentially dangerous” dogs according to the report. This means that from now on the dogs must have a muzzle on at all times while in public and a special fence must be built at the owner’s residence. The report states that the owner was ordered to contact authorities if any attacks happened following the 2004 attack but in this incident, the owner failed to contact police.

When a dog is involved in a single attack it could be construed as an accident but when that dog is involved in multiple attacks, putting several people in grave danger, something should be done to prevent that dog from attacking again. The worst part about this incident is that several children have been “caught in the crosshairs” in these attacks and suffered serious injuries. The dogs’ owner in these incidents should be held accountable for his dogs’ actions and the victims deserve to have compensation for their suffering.

Dog Bites Child in Eye

WAAF 48 News in Lexington, Alabama have reported that a 6-year-old child was transported to a hospital after being bitten in the eye by a dog. According to the report, the dog was found in the boy’s yard and the boy went to pet the dog. The dog began growling and when the child stood up, the dog attacked him and bit him in the eye and in both of his ears.

The report states that the dog is currently in quarantine. No information has been given on the treatment that the boy will be receiving as a result of this attack. There is also no information on whether the dog’s owner will face any legal action for the attack.

Children are often the ones that face the most danger with any kind of animal, including dogs. In most cases, a child will go to pet a dog despite not knowing where the dog comes from or whether or not the dog is dangerous. In the event that the dog actually is dangerous, the potential for serious injury is significantly increased. A child may go to pet a dog or play with it and the dog may consider the child to be a threat. This often leads to the dog attacking the child because it reacts to the child’s actions.

6-Year-Old Boy Severely Bitten by Dog

The Sunshine Coast Daily News has posted a report that a 6-year-old boy was bitten by a terrier dog while he was at the park with his father. According to the report, the dog’s owners simply walked away without checking on the boy to make sure he was fine.

The dog was reportedly unrestrained and ran toward the little boy in an aggressive manner. The boy’s father, Gavin Halsey said things could have been much worse as the boy was standing between the dog and a small baby. Halsey believes the baby could have easily been the victim of the attack instead of his son, which could potentially have been much worse. Halsey was upset over the lack of sympathy the two dog owners showed over the attack as they simply drove away in their car following the incident. There is no news on whether any legal action will be pursued in the incident.

Halsey’s reaction to the situation is completely understandable. When your loved one is attacked by an animal belonging to another person, the general thought is that they will at least show some compassion and check on them to make sure they are ok and no serious injuries have occurred. The fact that the owners of this terrier showed no regard for Halsey’s son demonstrates that there is always going to be people that are extremely cruel in situations like this. The injuries that the boy sustained could have been far worse and could potentially have been life-threatening. There is no excuse for the lack of compassion demonstrated by the dog’s owners

Dog Food Recalled Due to Salmonella

According to the website nwcn.com, the Natural Balance Pet Food Company is recalling several of its 5 lb. and 28 lb. bags of sweet potato and chicken dry dog food because tests have shown that it may be contaminated with salmonella. According to the report, the dog food was manufactured in December of 2009 with a written “Best by” date of June 2011.

The company has stated that they have not received any complaints or reports of illness as a result of the contaminated dog food. The report states that twenty-six states have been affected by the recall. Anybody that purchased the recalled dog food can return it to the store from which they bought it and get a full refund.

Salmonella can not only affect animals but also people. In this instance, the contaminated dog food becomes the source from which the dogs get sick and then pass the illness on to their owners. There are several symptoms that can affect both animals and humans alike including vomiting, stomach pain, fever, and diarrhea. The recall from the Natural Balance company is exactly the kinds of preventative measures a company should take in order to ensure the safety and health of their consumers.

Pit Bull Laws Strengthened In Worcester, Massachusets

The City Council of Worcester, Massachusetts has given preliminary approval to ordinance that would impose stricter restrictions on owners of pit bull dogs. A decision will be made next month whether or not this ordinance will pass to state law.

The ordinance requires pit bull dogs to have a leash and a muzzle when they are not on or near their owner’s property. Pit bull owners are also required to place warning signs on their property and call authorities if their dog causes an injury to bystanders including other animals. This law also applies if their dog poses a potential threat to people or animals nearby, even if an attack has not occurred.

Setting these laws in place is a great idea in order to prevent dangerous animals from causing harm to innocent bystanders including other animals and even children. There have been many reports in the news about a child being attacked and mauled by a dog. This has not only occurred with pit bulls but other dogs as well. Setting laws to maintain dogs on a leash and muzzle will prevent the dog from attacking a person or another animal and causing very serious injuries. In many dog attack cases, victims often suffer serious bite injuries to their legs, neck, arms and face which can lead to several surgeries to repair the damage. In other cases, the bites can lead to infection and death if they are not treated properly and in a timely manner. Laws such as these instated by Massachusetts could easily prevent such cases from occurring.
