Similac Finds Bugs in Formula, Issues Recall

Similac, the number one most trusted and bought formula in the country has voluntarily recalled 5 million cans and plastic containers of the powdered formula. The recall is being issued only as a precaution after small beetles were found at one of its manufacturing plants, according to the company.

The bugs are a common insect found within the warehouse plant, and were not found in the majority of the Similac formulas, according to the company. The affected products were sent throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, Bermuda and 17 other countries. There is also the concern that many hospitals use Similac formula to give to newborns who cannot be breastfed.   Similac has set up a website to deal with the recall and has provided a number for consumers to call to find out which of the products was affected. Some of the lots of the recalled products include: Similac Advance LCP with iron powder, Go and Grow milk powder and Isomil Advance Powder. None of the liquid formula was affected.

This product recall was fortunately issued before there were any reported cases of illness.  It has not been determined by the company if ingesting these bugs can cause serious physical damage to the baby. Regardless, if your baby has experienced any type of illness or strange behavior, please contact a physician as soon as possible.

Honda Recalls Vehicles Due to Ignition Problem

On Monday August 9th 2010 the Honda Motor Co. stated that they were recalling more than 380,000 of its vehicles to fix an ignition switch problem. This will mark the third major consumer problem that Honda Motor Co. has had since 2003.

The ignition switch can lead to a vehicle rolling away and causing a collision. The ignition key interlock is problematic because they can be damaged or worn after use. When the ignition key is damaged or worn it could remove completely and cause the car to roll away.   The recall will affect 197,000 Honda Accords and 117,000 Honda Civics from the 2003 model year and roughly 69,000 Element vehicles from the 2003 and 2004 model years in the United States. Honda released a statement that said it had received many complaints about the failure and is aware of a few incidents with only one resulting in a minor injury. The company stated that they will be notifying customers about their vehicles necessary repairs by late September and encourages affected vehicles to contact a dealer as soon as possible after receiving the notification.

Vehicles are depended upon in millions of families across the country. When you purchase a new car you expect that the car will last years before encountering any problems. You certainly never expect that a manufacturer problem can potentially kill or harm any of your loved ones.  A major manufacturer like Honda has the responsibility to ensure that every part of their vehicles is safe and reliable for every family. Any negligent manufacturer must be held responsible for injuries that occur from faulty items. If you or a loved one has been injured from an item that has been recalled, contacting an Arizona personal injury attorney is your best option for compensation.

Dog Food Recalled Due to Salmonella

According to the website nwcn.com, the Natural Balance Pet Food Company is recalling several of its 5 lb. and 28 lb. bags of sweet potato and chicken dry dog food because tests have shown that it may be contaminated with salmonella. According to the report, the dog food was manufactured in December of 2009 with a written “Best by” date of June 2011.

The company has stated that they have not received any complaints or reports of illness as a result of the contaminated dog food. The report states that twenty-six states have been affected by the recall. Anybody that purchased the recalled dog food can return it to the store from which they bought it and get a full refund.

Salmonella can not only affect animals but also people. In this instance, the contaminated dog food becomes the source from which the dogs get sick and then pass the illness on to their owners. There are several symptoms that can affect both animals and humans alike including vomiting, stomach pain, fever, and diarrhea. The recall from the Natural Balance company is exactly the kinds of preventative measures a company should take in order to ensure the safety and health of their consumers.

Man Files Lawsuit against Frozen Dinner Distributor

A man in Clackamus County, Oregon is suing frozen dinner distributor ConAgra Foods after he contracted a strain of salmonella. The man seeks $75,000 in damages as a result of suffering from salmonella after consuming a Marie Callender’s brand frozen dinner meal. The report states that a nationwide recall of the frozen dinners has been announced after 30 other people in 15 states have fallen ill to the same strain of the salmonella virus that the man suffered from.

No deaths have been reported as a result of this outbreak, however. According to the report, the CDC is currently investigating this specific outbreak. The man that filed the lawsuit had to remain in a medical facility not only for the salmonella illness but also because of injuries he suffered after fainting due to the virus’s effects.

This is one of many outbreaks of salmonella that have occurred in recent weeks as a result of contaminated food products either sold in the mass market (such as these Marie Callender’s meals) or sold in restaurants like Subway and others. Salmonella poisoning is a very serious illness that can have drastic effects on a person’s health and it can even cause a fatality if the disease is not treated. In particular salmonella causes rapid dehydration which can eventually kill someone. Anybody who contracts the disease should seek immediate medical attention.

Frozen Chicken Nuggets Recalled Due To Concern of Plastic

The Washington Post has reported that Perdue Farms, a chicken processing plant located in Georgia, has voluntarily recalled 92,000 pounds of its frozen chicken nuggets. The recall has been announced due to a concern that the nuggets could contain small pieces of blue plastic inside the packages.

The Great Value brand of Fully Cooked Chicken Nuggets is currently sold in Wal-Mart stores throughout the nation. At the time the report had been posted, no incidents of illness had been reported. The U.S. Agriculture Department’s Food Safety and Inspection Service have urged customers to see a physician if they are concerned about injury or illness resulting from consuming this product.

Food safety is a factor that all companies should be aware of and should maintain. Many food borne illnesses can occur from a variety of reasons including contaminants such as metals, chemicals or other contaminants. These contaminants can cause illnesses such as food poisoning which can be very harmful if it is not handled early. Many people have been killed as a result of contracting food poisoning. Roughly 27 million people have been killed after contracting food poisoning and not taking care of it in time. The fact that Perdue Farms has announced this recall shows their concern for the safety of their consumers.

Subpoena Filed Against Toyota over Faulty Steering Components

A grand jury has filed a subpoena against Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp. to get access to documents regarding defects in the steering components of certain Toyota models. The documents the grand jury subpoenaed were unrelated to other incidents of safety investigations with the sudden acceleration of certain vehicles.

According to the report, the subpoena was issued 3 weeks ago on June 29th and requested documents related to broken or otherwise malfunctioning relay rods for the vehicles. The malfunctioning relay rods caused either partial or total loss of control in steering. An incident with the relay rods occurred as far back as 2004 in Japan which injured five people. In an unrelated incident, in April Toyota was forced to pay $16.4 million in fines because they failed to announce a recall of gas pedals that were sticking.

Toyota has faced a huge amount of scrutiny because of the issues that have been increasing with many of their vehicles. This subpoena is not the first that Toyota has faced according to this report. In addition, Toyota has also faced several recalls and product liability lawsuits since September because of many defects and malfunctions with their vehicles.

Iams Cat Food Recall

The cat food was sold nationwide and contained a lack of thiamine which cats need in their food in order to be healthy. The vitamin is necessary for the health of the cat’s central nervous system.   When a cat does not have enough thiamine for a long period of time, a variety of things can occur

The symptoms that your cat may feel if they have been eating the cat food includes: loss of weight, vomiting, loss of appetite, salivation, downward curving of the neck, wobbly gait, falling, and seizures. Different breeds of cats may experience only some of symptoms and sometimes all. If you think that your cat is suffering from a thiamine deficiency then contacting a veterinarian as soon as possible. The risk of your cat suffering any serious health problems is lowered if your cat was eating the defective cat food along with other cat food. The other Iams food was not at risk. If you purchased the defective cat food you may pursue a refund with Procter & Gamble who has someone available from 9am until 7pm at the following number: 877-340-8826.
